The Significance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Today’s World

In the 21st century, we find ourselves living in difficult and degenerate times, when the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance appear to be at their peak, and when our lives are increasingly focused outward rather than inward. Yet even in such challenging times, I believe there are individuals—spiritual leaders of different traditions, Nobel Peace Laureates, scientists, scholars, and other wise and knowledgeable human beings—who sincerely dedicate themselves to the well-being of humanity. One such individual, whom I deeply revere, is His Holiness the Dalai Lama. I believe it is immensely precious for the entire world that such a person is still among us.

We often speak of world peace, environmental protection, religious harmony, and the well-being of humanity. However, if we truly wish to live in a peaceful and harmonious world, it is ultimately our responsibility to create such a world. For this reason, we should not only recognize and celebrate individuals who dedicate their lives to these ideals, but also listen to their advice and seek their compassionate guidance while they are still with us. I consider this to be of immeasurable value.

For instance, I cannot begin to imagine what His Holiness the Dalai Lama must have endured throughout his life. He was forced to leave his homeland and became a refugee. Yet rather than allowing these circumstances to overwhelm him, he transformed his situation into an opportunity to serve humanity and worked steadfastly to fulfill what he calls his “Four Commitments.”

His first commitment, as a human being, is to promote world peace. His second commitment, as a religious practitioner and spiritual leader, is to promote interreligious harmony throughout the world. His third commitment, as a Tibetan, is to continue working for the cause of Tibet. Finally, his fourth commitment is to revive and preserve the ancient Nalanda tradition of India, from which the profound Buddhist teachings and philosophical traditions that flourished in Tibet originated.

These Four Commitments are profoundly relevant to the challenges facing our world today. For this reason, I consider them to be of immense importance—not only for Tibetans and Buddhists, but for humanity as a whole.

As a Student and Devotee

As for myself, I come from Tibet and have profound reverence and devotion for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. While I was still in Tibet, I frequently dreamed of him. Perhaps this was due to some special connection from a previous life; I cannot say for certain. After arriving in India, however, I had the great fortune to receive many teachings from His Holiness, particularly teachings on the Middle Way, the Six Perfections, and several extremely profound and complex Buddhist texts.

His Holiness possesses an extraordinary ability to explain even the most difficult philosophical teachings with remarkable clarity and depth. His knowledge and wisdom amazed me, and through receiving his teachings, I developed an even deeper faith and confidence in him and in the Dharma he teaches. To me, this is the kind of faith that arises from truly knowing and understanding a teacher through direct experience, rather than from faith based merely on hearsay.

The point I wish to emphasize is that, if we genuinely aspire to world peace, democracy, compassion, and the well-being of humanity, it would be a tremendous loss not to see His Holiness and listen to his teachings while he is still with us.

His commitment to genuine world peace is not merely an abstract ideal. It has been shaped by his own extraordinary life experiences, profound learning, and countless years of reflection. He has experienced hardship, displacement, loss, and uncertainty, yet he continues to speak of compassion, forgiveness, dialogue, and peace. For this reason, I believe that not having the opportunity to meet him or hear his teachings during his lifetime would be an irreplaceable loss—not only for individuals, but for the world.

As a Buddhist

Secondly, as Buddhists, we understand that there are many qualities that characterize an authentic and worthy spiritual teacher: ethical discipline, wisdom, compassion, patience, and a genuine concern for the welfare of others.

Regardless of whether one's Buddhist path is understood through the perspectives of Hinayana, Mahayana, or Vajrayana, I believe that His Holiness embodies the essential qualities of an accomplished teacher. Therefore, particularly for Buddhists, not having seen him, heard his teachings, or benefited from his knowledge and wisdom would indeed be a tremendous loss.

There is an analogy in the Buddhist tradition of a teacher transmitting knowledge and realization to a disciple like the contents of one vase being completely poured into another, without anything being left behind in the original vessel. Similarly, the disciple strives to receive the teacher's understanding as precisely as possible, as though receiving a perfect mold.

In this sense, I believe that we should make every effort to receive and understand the teachings, knowledge, and wisdom of His Holiness as fully as possible while he is still alive.

According to Buddhist teachings, the Buddha foretold that in degenerate times he would manifest in the world in the form of a monk. I have complete conviction in this, even though such a belief may sound like a story or a matter of faith to some people. From the depth of my own conviction, I believe that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a manifestation of the Buddha and a great Bodhisattva.

Therefore, for Buddhists, the opportunity to receive his teachings is something extraordinarily precious. To fail to recognize or make use of such an opportunity would, in my view, be a profound loss.

As a Tibetan Buddhist

Thirdly, as Tibetan Buddhists, it is especially important for us to receive the teachings and guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

If one has been fortunate enough to receive his teachings once, one should not simply feel satisfied with that single occasion. We should continue to receive his spiritual and worldly advice again and again, because his teachings consistently emphasize compassion, ethical conduct, responsibility, and the cultivation of a virtuous mind.

However, merely listening to teachings is not enough. Once we have received such precious advice, we must make an effort to put it into practice and integrate it into our everyday lives. The true value of a teaching lies not simply in hearing it, but in transforming our thoughts, words, and actions through its application.

For Tibetans, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is deeply revered and cherished. He has served as a spiritual guide and father figure to generations of Tibetans, both inside Tibet and throughout the Tibetan diaspora. From the Fifth Dalai Lama to the present Fourteenth Dalai Lama, the Dalai Lamas have played an immensely important role in the history, culture, spirituality, and identity of Tibet.

For us Tibetans, therefore, His Holiness represents not only an individual spiritual teacher but also the continuation of a profound tradition and the values that Tibetans have preserved for generations. It is our responsibility to maintain this sacred connection and commitment to the lineage of the Dalai Lamas and to ensure that these precious teachings and values continue to be preserved for future generations.

A Precious Audience

Recently, I had the extraordinary fortune to travel to India and receive an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. I firmly believe that this precious opportunity came through my unwavering faith and deep reverence for him and for my teachers.

I do not know whether I possess all the qualities that one should have as a good student or practitioner. Yet I believe that this opportunity was made possible, at least in part, by whatever little faith, devotion, and understanding I have cultivated, together with my reverence for my teachers and my willingness to place my trust in their guidance.

For this reason, I feel an even greater responsibility to cherish the teachings I have received and to put them into practice.

Conclusion

In a world facing conflict, division, environmental challenges, materialism, and increasing uncertainty, the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama is immensely precious.

His message is ultimately simple yet profound: compassion, inner peace, dialogue, ethical responsibility, and genuine concern for the well-being of others. His life demonstrates that even in the face of tremendous suffering and adversity, one can choose compassion rather than hatred, forgiveness rather than resentment, and service to others rather than self-interest.

Whether one is Buddhist or not, Tibetan or not, religious or not, there is much that can be learned from his life and his teachings.

Therefore, I believe that while His Holiness is still among us, we should recognize the extraordinary opportunity we have been given. We should meet him when possible, listen carefully to his teachings, learn from his wisdom, and—most importantly—put his advice into practice.

To have such a teacher and such a human being among us in these difficult times is an immeasurable blessing. To fail to recognize the preciousness of this opportunity would be a tremendous loss, both for ourselves and for the world.
